50/50 Monochrome

I've got Nail Mail! And not just any Nail Mail, Nail Mail that included the new Models Own Velvet Goth collection! I am so in love with this collection, usually I only want a couple of my favourite polishes from a collection but I couldn't resist buying the whole of this one - they were all my favourites!

I've seen plenty of swatches of these beautiful polishes now from the lucky people that get them before the rest of us, so I thought I'd try something different with them and do a bit of simple nail art.

Although I am not a fashionable person, I have seen a lot of monochrome around lately so thought if I don't have fashionable clothes I'll wear the fashion on my nails. So here's what I came up with:

For this I have used Obsidian from Models Own Velvet Goth collection; a beautiful charcoal coloured glitter. Although this glitter polish dries matte, it is still very sparkly with tiny pieces of silver glitter as well as larger hexagonal pieces. Obsidian applies very easily without the clumping that you get with most glitter polishes. This meant I could paint the straight line down the middle of the nail free-hand. I used two coats of Obsidian to make it completely opaque.

On top of the white half of the nails (I used Barry M's Matt White) I tried a few simple designs using Models Own Artistix black nail art pen to create straight lines and basic shapes such as triangles and squares. Simple but effective.

Yet again I have gone for my 50/50 design, I'm so happy with the reaction I have had to the previous 50/50 designs I have done and have seen people recreating them, so thought I would try out a few more. I think this design looks great in monochrome, what do you think? I'm not quite ready for dark Autumn colours yet, I'm still desperately hanging on to bright Summer colours, but the contrast of the black and white in monochrome is leading me in slowly!

I added a glossy top coat to this manicure to see how Obsidian would look shiny rather than matte:

Glossy

Personally, I prefer Obsidian as a matte polish. Which do you prefer?

I'm very happy with this manicure and so far I am very impressed with the Velvet Goth collection. I'm glad that I have shown how they can be used in nail art and I'm looking forward to trying out some more with the rest of the collection.

What are your thoughts on the Velvet Goth collection so far? Have you tried some nail art with them yet? I'd love to see what you have come up with!

  2. Wow! This is amazing. I haven't seen Velvet Goth used in nail art yet - great work. I wasn't too sure on the black one (obsidian) to start with but this has changed my mind. Will pick it up next time I'm in Boots. Looking forward to seeing what you create with the rest of the collection - Ru.
