Ask Me Anything - The Answers

Hello!

Today I've got the answers to the questions you have been asking me this week. Thank you to everyone that sent me questions, and I hope you enjoy reading this post :)

What do you do for a living? (@abeautidelight - asked on Twitter).

At the moment I am a student, I am about to go into my last year of my Chemistry Masters Degree. I also work part time in a shoe shop! However, after university I am hoping to either go into the Green Chemistry industry, Nuclear industry, Cosmetic industry (as a cosmetic chemist, although the dream is to have my own cosmetics brand!), or something to do with animals. I wish there was a job that consisted of all four!

What are some of your favourite blogs? (@Allthngsbutiful - asked on Twitter)

Ohhh there are a lot a like to read, but the three I spend most of my time reading are:

Fundamentally Flawless

Pinkglow's Pretty Polish
Cluttered Closet

Go check them out! :)

How did you get free samples like Barry M? - did you contact them, or did they contact you? (Anonymous - Asked by blog comment)

I worked very hard and put a lot of effort into making my reviews and swatches the highest standard I could. I still do, and I think companies can tell which bloggers really are passionate about what they do, and are honest in what they are saying, compared to those that just want free stuff. The first company I worked with were a fairly small company, and I sent them a review I had done of one of their polishes that I had won in a competition, and they replied saying they loved my review and asked if I'd like to review some of their new polishes. So I suppose I made the first move there. The rest have come to me and I feel so privileged and grateful for every opportunity I get. And I certainly don't see them as 'free samples'. To me they're my opportunity to give my unbiased, honest, and in-depth opinion on a product in order to help people decide if it is something they would want to buy. I think it is a very important task and I feel extremely privileged when asked by companies to do that - it really means a lot to me. With regards to Barry M, I was amazed to get that opportunity and I still get so excited when I think about how lucky I am. It was definitely one of my happiest moments when I received the email, I still laugh to myself when I replay the moment in my head (biggest grin, hyperventilating on my bed, followed by a running numerous laps around the house screaming!). Sometimes I feel that other bloggers think I don't deserve it. Like this question for example, maybe I'm just reading into it too much but I think if people thought I deserved it they wouldn't ask :/

What other hobbies do you have apart from blogging? (Sarah - Asked by blog comment).

Hmm, blogging seems to have taken over, but before I started my blog I used to love horse riding and dancing. I'd love to start them up again but horse riding is so expensive, and there aren't any dance classes near to where I live :( I paint and draw every so often but I'm not very good at it! A recent hobby is borrowing next door's dog for a few hours each day and taking him out for a walk - I love animals!

What camera do you use to take your photos? (The Sequined Nail - Asked by blog comment).

I use a Canon EOS 700D with a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro lens. I'll have a page about all my equipment and my photo set-up soon :)

If you had to pick one nail polish to wear for the rest of your life what would it be and why? (@JewelBeautyBlog - Asked on Twitter).

Ahhh such a difficult question! Probably Models Own Beach Bag from their Polish For Tans collection. It's my favourite polish at the moment, and even though it's a summer colour I definitely wouldn't mind wearing it all year round. It's one of those that you can't stop staring at!

How different do you think your life would be if you didn't have your blog? (Jess - asked by email).

I can't even think what I'd do without my blog now, it's like it's own little world. I spend the majority of the day thinking about nail designs and new post ideas. I think if I didn't have my blog I would probably have found a different hobby, maybe have joined the gym and spent my time there (or on The Sims - my guilty pleasure!!). I would certainly be a very different person; I've become more creative, confident, and ambitious since I started blogging. Making a blog was definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made :)

My nail varnish doesn't work with a sponge, is it too thin or watery? (@_zara_ - Asked on Instagram).
I'm guessing you mean when doing gradients. I sometimes find that I need to apply each colour a few times if the polish is thin to build the colour up on the nail. Give that a go :)

Are you doing any nail art for this World Cup? (@lovefromangelic - Twitter)

Yes! I am taking part in Nailsxo's World Cup competition. I got Brazil (yay!). Here are the nails I created for it, and if you want to follow the competition or read more about it then click here.

Easiest things for a beginner to start practising? (RachelBell1 - Twitter)
Get yourself some nail art pens (I recommend either Rio, or Models Own) that have both a nib and a brush. I find these really easy to use, much easier than nail art brushes. Start off with doing polka dots or stripes, you'll become more steady with the pens and then be able to move onto other designs. It might even be a good idea to buy some false nail spines/wheels and practise on them before moving onto your own nails. Nail beads and studs are really easy to use and will get you thinking creatively. You could also make gradients by using a sponge (check out this simple tutorial by The Nailasaurus).

Where do you find inspiration for new nail art? (@nailsby_caroline - Asked on Instagram).
Sometimes I just doodle in my notepad and transfer them to my nails. Or I find patterns on the Internet or just on objects I come across like wallpaper or clothes. To be honest, I do struggle with coming up with nail art ideas, some people have recommended looking on Pinterest, so that might be a good place to start :)

If you were only allowed to use 5 beauty products for the rest of your life, what would they be? (Asked by Jasmine)

1) Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer.
2) Avon Super Shock mascara.
3) Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo (that counts as a beauty product doesn't it??)
4) Nail file.
5) Models Own Beach Bag nail polish.

What's your favourite nail varnish make? (@isabel_breedenx - Asked on Instagram).

Another difficult question! It is definitely between Models Own and Barry M, I flick between them both. At the moment it's probably Barry M.

Is there a design that when you're stuck for new ideas that you always return back too? (@liverpoollashes - Asked on Instagram).
Yes, my 50/50 designs! You can really mix them up with different colours, and they make even simple designs, such as stripes or polka dots, look that little bit more exciting. They're really easy to do too - they look harder to do than they are! You can see them all here. I'm still not bored of them and don't think I ever will be.

I hope you enjoyed this Q&A post! If you think of any other questions you want to ask me, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email (TheNailyMail@gmail.com) - I reply to them all :)
