HJ Manicure AW14 Shimmer Nail Polishes - Swatches and Review*

Hello!

I'm back with some more swatches from one of my new favourite British brands, HJ Manicure. I tried two of the polishes from their 'Nude' collection a few weeks ago (read the post here) and fell in love with the brand. I love the on-trend shades, the luxurious bottles, and the smooth formulas, but what I love most about this brand is that their polishes are 5-free, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free (read more about that here)!

I was left with a fantastic first impression of HJ Manicure so I was made up to be able to try three of the newly launched AW14 Shimmer polishes. Below, from left to right, is Alpine Green*, Midnight Sky*, and Vintage Bronze*.

Vintage Bronze
This is such an unusual shade, it caught my eye straight away in the bottle. It also caught my mum's eye apparently as I have noticed she has been sneakily borrowing it haha!
2 coats, no top coat.

I suppose you could call this a two-tone polish in a way because, as you can see from the pictures above and below, it appears different colours when you look at it from different angles. There's a bronze/brown colour that you can see above, and a green/bronze that you can see below. It is so beautiful!

A closer look at the shimmery bronze bits

You can see the two-tone effect quite nicely here; brown/bronze looking at it straight on,
and green/bronze from a lower angle.

Alpine Green
This deep green appears almost black from a distance. It's a great alternative for those that are looking for a dark side but don't want to wear black.
2 coats, no top coat.

Midnight Sky
The least shimmery of the three but a stunning shade nevertheless. I am a huge fan of deep blue polishes, it's a colour I wear all year round.
2 coats, no top coat.

The shimmer is quite subtle, only really standing out when you get up close.

The formula
I think some people get the impression that when a nail polish is '5-free' some of the quality is compromised, but it really isn't. As you can see from the pictures these polishes have a really shiny, professional-looking finish, even without a top coat. I found the formulas to be really smooth, allowing for easy application, and the polish dries fairly quickly too. Alpine Green is slightly runnier than the others and it did pool down the sides of my nails at times so I'd recommend applying this one in thinner coats. The wand and the brush are quite long due to the shape of the bottle, this can mean you don't have as much control over the brush, but the brush is very precise so it still applies neatly.

The picture below gives you a better look at the shimmers in the sun. Vintage Bronze is gorgeous!

Overall
I'm loving these new shades and once again I was very impressed with the formulas and the professional-looking finishes. I feel much happier using products that are free from toxic ingredients too.

If you have to choose just one make it Vintage Bronze; it is the most unusual shade of the three and the two-tone effect is stunning.

You can see the full range of colours and read more about the brand on the HJ Manicure website. Each polish is priced at £9.50 for a 15 mL bottle.

What do you think of HJ Manicure then? I'd love to know your thoughts on non-toxic cosmetics too! Leave me a comment below :)
